At a garage sale, I picked up a small, framed oil painting signed "Key" in the lower left corner. The sticker on the back says it''s from Art Associates in New York City and that it was hand painted by Vivian S. Key. I was not able to find much when I Googled that name, but I did find a couple of things about Vivian Schuyler Key, a Harlem Renaissance painter. Neither the style of my painting nor the subject matter (flowers) suggests any relation to what I read about Vivian Schuyler Key (1905-1990), but I am aware that in times of dire straits, an artist may paint in another style to help make ends meet. It''s a nice little painting, and definitely worth the dollar I paid at the garage sale!! If it''s an authentic Key, it''s probably somewhat interesting or possibly somewhat valuable to a collector. How can I check to see if this painting is authentic? |

Vivian Schuyler Key, was my maternal grandmother. I have the largest collection of her works, from pieces like the one you described, to jewelry, sculpture, oils and watercolors. I commissioned an art historian to research and write a biography, which contains pictures and a catalogue of much of her works. It is entitled ''One of many voices''. She was the first African-American fine arts graduate of the famed Pratt Institute. However, her place, in art history is not as prominent as her male contemporaries. Please contact me, at 770-987-7822, or through the e-mail address listed above. I would be happy to authenticate your piece. GM. |
