I have an oil of the cardinal by Toby Rosenthal has been in the family as long as I can remember was given to me by an uncle in his eighties when I was a young girl in 1967. Said the cardinal was some kind of relative? Malloy or something like that?? He stressed it was a real painting, the artist was a family friend, And I should keep it always. Now I have seen it on line and I am wondering what it is.

I have a numbered print of a painting from Toby E. Rosenthal titled Seine Madonna, 1908. The number on the back of the frame is 08406. It looks like an original because it has what looks like paint stokes on it. But I researched and know that the original is on display at the Museum of San Fransisco. I would be interested to know if it is of any value. Thank you

Afraid to tell you, but your painting is definitely not an original. There are many prints in circulation and the original has been in a museum in San Francisco for many, many years. It is a very large canvas and probably wouldn't fit on any wall in your house.

I also grew up with an oil of this portrait hanging on the wall in my grandmothers livingroom. I don't know which family member received it when she passed, but I think that there are many copies of the particular print ou there. Regardless of wether they are original's or copy's by the artist, his work is wonderful in their detail and in the feelings that they convey.

For those that are looking for copies or prints, it isn't hard to find them on line. Best of luck to you.

I'm sure I remember the original of the" sleeping cardinal" hanging in the Palace of Legion of Honor in SF back in the 70's or '80's. I remember because growing up we had a print of this hanging over the mantle in our frontroom in SF. Could there be another similiar original painted? Good luck to you I can't wait to hear the rest of your story.

We bought the "Seine Madonna, 1908" at an estate sale for .50 cents.

His signature appears on the painting as Toby E. Rosenthal, Munich 1908... there is nothing else.

We went to this estate sale several days in a row, this painting kept grabbing my attention, but it was marked far too high... the last day of the estate sale everything you could fit in a bag went for $5.00, I grabbed the painting. I am estimating that we spent maybe $0.50 on it, but it could be lower.

How do I know if it is a print? or an original? PLEASE HELP!!

Thank you, in advance.

Is your painting of the Cardinal in oil or water color? We have an old painting by Toby E. Rosenthal given to my mother by an old wealthy male friend. We have wanted to find out if we have an original or a print.
What did you find out about your painting? Is it the original? We can see his signature on this printing which appears to be mounted on wood, very well, but the date is not so clear because of the frame covering it and the name of the printing.

We have always enjoyed the humor in this painting and got it when my mother passed away.

Thanks for your reply, George Hames

Toby Edward Rosenthal paintings do go through the auction markets infrequently. Prices obviously depend on subject, size and the prospect of two people bidding against each other! Prices as far as I can make out vary greatly a 44" x 72" painting went through auction a few years ago for $30,000, but a monk painting size 13" x 16" went through auctioneers Weidlers for $1108. If you do want to sell, your best bet might be to go to someone like Christies but put a reserve that you would be happy with which is not going to be too offputting to the bidder, but will be tempting. Best of luck!

I have what I think is a print of a Rosenthal painting. It is a picture of a boy carving a statue of Mary. On the bottom it says Toby E. Rosental PIWX, Munich 1908 Segen der Arbeit.

I don't know where to start research on this.

Thank you.

Wow!!!...If you own an origial Toby Edward Rosenthal, it's most certainly valuable. Check on line under search for legion of honor. Look for "Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco" They should have an address and phone number. This particular museum has several of his original painting on loan. One is the "Seine Madonna, 1908" Which is my favorite. It's on loan to them by the Stern Jacobs Family. They will definately know who would want to purchase it and it's value. Toby Rosenthal was a painter born in New Haven, Conn. (1848-1917) and studied under Henri Bacon and under Fortunato Arrio Francisco, then in Munich under Carl von Piloty in 1865-Munich 1917. Let me know if this info is helpful or not, I can check some other sources, but your going to be astonished at the value...good luck!
