I have just purchased "The cardnial''s portrait" by Toby E. Rosenthal....Signed Toby E. Rosenthal Munich 1896...I would very much like more information on this painting. It seems to be painted on thick cardboard-like material. Maybe this is old canvas??Is this worth anything??Thanks!

I, too have a print, i believe of the lithogtaph by Toby E Rosenthal of The Cardinal's Portrait.
It is in a very otnate gold frame, the whole piece weights 10lbs. The bsck of the print is covered entirely in old brown paper and down at the very bottom is a label that reads THE CARDINAL'S PORTRAIT BY TOBY E ROSENTHAL the size of the print inside the frame is 19" high by 24" wide. It appears to be printed on a very hard board. At the bottom right of the print on the front is the artists signature followed by Munich 1896

The original of Rosenthal's 'Cardinal' is in storage at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. The oringinal of 'Seine Madonna' is at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco, I believe. Toby Rosenthal lived in S.F. in the late 19th century. There are many, many prints of both these paintings being sold on the internet for about $15.00. I am his grat-grand daughter.

I too have a picture of the "monk painting the cardinal" It was given to me by my Aunt right before she died. It has a signature on it and a date. The frame is a really old gold painted frame with braid tweed carved on it. It is probably not the original but maybe one of the first sets printed. who knows. Nice to know that there are others out there preserving these spiritual paintings.

My mother has what I believe may be a lithograph of The Cardinal's Portrait. She bought the piece over ten years ago at a church in Florida. There may also be a signature from Toby Rosenthal. I would like to know any information that you can give me about this particular piece.

I have 2 pictures by Toby E. Rosenthal - the one with the cardinal and another one that shows a young man carving a wooden statue of the Blessed Mother. We have had them hanging in our home for over 40 years. They are very beautiful.

I too am interested in knowing the location of
the original of Cardinal's Portrait by Toby
Edward Rosenthal. I have heard that it is in
one of the San Francisco Museums but I have
not been able to verify that. Could it be
owned by the Vatican. It is so beautiful!

I do know where a copy or poster can be
purchased. Go to:

http://www.biggallery.com

and put in Rosenthal. There is a poster
gallery in Nashville, Tenn. that carries it
in a 12 x 10 for under nine dollars + postage.
