I am stretching an oil painting on canvas that is warped. It is a fairly new painting that has never been stretched. The warping is most likely caused by varying drying rates within the painting in areas where the paint is fairly thick. Stretching has alimented most of the warps but there are still a few in the center top of the painting where the paint is very thick. I am afraid that if I try to stretch it anymore the canvas would overstretch and the paint will crack. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? |

The temptation would be to increase the stretching tension, but that probably would damage the painting, as you have already noted.
This is a job for a conservator. If you need to locate one, visit the AIC website:

If you are still having trouble with this perhaps you should get an opinion from a painting conservator. |
