After being away from the industry for over 15 years, the process of doing canvas transferes has progressed with technology and new products. I need a resource for training, be it a book, dvd, a manufacturers rep...etc...I need to know a list of supplies needed to get started. Any advice is appreciated.

As noted, canvas transfers are no longer popular, because modern inkjet printers can print directly onto the canvas.

Some suppliers of open edition prints offer them transferred to canvas for a nominal fee, which usually costs less than the labor and materials to do it in the shop.

But if you have paper artworks that you would like to transfer to canvas, there are several techniques, but the processes are not difficult.

I used to do it this way:

1. Apply linen-finish or canvas-finish heat-activated PVC laminating film to the print''s surface, and dry mount to foam board in the vacuum press at the same time.

2. Peel the laminating film off the substrate, and the image will come with it. This will also leave some residue of paper fibers on the back of the image.

3. Mount the laminating film/image to canvas in the vacuum press using dry mounting film, not tissue, with an overlay of foam rubber to emphasixe the texture.

4. Stretch like a painting.

Professionals recommend soaking the laminated paper in water, removing all of the paper, leaving only the image on the laminating film. This makes a thinner image layer that conforms better to the canvas texture.

I have not done any for years, but I THINK that now they scan the image and then just print it on canvas. We don''t have enough volume for that, just send people to a local photo finishing place. Someone else may know more about this than me.
