PPFA 2013, the Annual Convention of the Professional Picture Framers Association, will kick off with a Chapter Leaders Conference on Saturday, January 26, then will run January 27-30, concurrent with the West Coast Art & Frame Expo/National Conference.
Suzanne Smeaton, gallery director at Eli Wilner & Company in New York, will be the PPFA Luncheon keynote speaker on Sunday, January 27. Her presentation, sponsored by Larson-Juhl, will showcase the re-creation of the original ninetenth-century frame for “Washington Crossing the Delaware” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It will detail every step of the process, from working with curators and period photographs to final delivery and installation of the frame holding the 12’x21’ iconic painting. The luncheon will also include the annual PPFA Service Awards and installation of the new PPFA Board.
The line-up of PPFA speakers includes Kirstie Bennett, Ellen Collins, Jared Davis, David Lantrip, Rob Markoff, Joyce Michels, Jim Miller, Chris Paschke, Hugh Phibbs, Linda Pujo, and Ron Stark. Ten classes meet the requirements for PPFA continuing education credit for Master Certified Picture Framers but are open to all framers.
The PPFA Welcome Reception & Vendor Showcase will be held Sunday evening, a sneak peek of several products prior to the opening of the WCAF Expo.
Entries in the finals of the International Open and Print Framing Competition will be showcased on the trade show floor, and framers can vote for Popular Choice by 6 p.m., January 29. Winners will be honored at a reception January 30.
PPFA members can train to become competition judges, and current judges can update their credentials. PPFA will also offer Certification courses and exams.

Larson-Juhl Supports Two Reforestation Projects
Larson-Juhl is supporting two reforestation projects, both in the U.S. The company’s first annual Forest Friendly Month is funding an additional 3,200 trees, bringing the total planted in Larson-Juhl’s Global ReLeaf Program to 428,000 since 1991.
The Boundary Junction project, in Clearwater National Forest, Indiana, involves reforestation of 5,100 acres damaged by fire in 2007. The Diamond 8 Red tree-planting project in the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will restore red pines to a fully stocked stand that has recently seen significant defoliation due to Jack pine budworm.

FrameArt Expo Slated for March
The European Fine Art & Frame Exhibition will be held March 22-24 at Fiera Milano, presenting the best of European frames, graphic arts, equipment, and technology. Now in its third year, FrameArt Expo features the leading European framing and art companies, emphasizing the theme of “Made in Europe.”
FrameArt Expo 2013 will also offer an educational program, with a series of workshops and informative lectures on important topics like business, the digital world, and the latest stylistic trends. Photoshow, an international exhibition of Photo and Digital Imaging, will also be held in conjunction with FrameArt Expo.
Last year’s FrameArt Expo, held in Rome, was a big success and was attended by 6,500 dealers and buyers from 60 countries.
Last autumn FrameArt Expo reached a collaborative agreement with FAMA Europe (Frame Accessories Manufacturing Association) to help protect and promote the quality of framing products made in Europe.
“The many business opportunities offered by the Trade Fair have created new marketing incentives and commercial dynamics,” said Mauro Fioravanti, president of FAMA Europe. “We are convinced that the Fair is one of the most valid places to launch new companies and to support existing ones.”
