The winners of the PPFA 2009 International Framing Competition, held in Las Vegas in March, have been announced. Sponsors of the competitions were Bienfang, FrameTek, Frank's Fabrics, Meadowbrook Insurance Group, SoftTouch Solutions, and Vermont Hardwoods.
Bonnie Dietering of Art Incorporated in San Antonio, TX, took first place and a Judges Award for Best Use of Fabric in the Print category. All participants were required to frame the same print of a vintage necklace.
Judy Niewald and Mike Bettmann, CPF, Colorado Frame Co., Lakewood, CO, won second place, High Point First Time Entry, and a Judges Award for Best Shadowbox. Myrna Dow, High Desert Gallery, Sisters, OR, came in third. Other Judges Awards included New Techniques in Mat Design, won by Beatrice Ching, Frameworks Custom Picture Framing, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Most Dramatic Viewer Impact, Dan and Carrie Seachord, The Great Frame Up, Newport News, VA; Large Scale Memory Box, Amy Engdahl, CPF, Akron, OH; and Technical Merit, Hand-carved Mat, Michael Derr, CPF, Frame-n-Art, Albuquerque, NM.
Four Honorable Mentions were presented to Deborah Hill, MCPF, Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art, San Antonio, TX; Jennifer Robey, MCPF, Bradley's Art & Frame, Houston, TX; Barb Pelton, MCPF, and Artfully Framed, Poplar Bluff, MO. The Seachords, Popular Choice, voted on by attendees of the trade show, went to Engdahl.
The Open Competition allows participants to frame anything without restriction. Deborah Price, Frame Shop Inc., Morgan City, LA, earned first place and High Point First Time Entry.
Dean Cardenas, also of Art Incorporated, received the Popular Choice award. Other winners included Kristen Ling, CPF, A Framer's Touch, Forest Grove, OR, second place; and Mariska Kavich, CPF, Mikki's Frame Shop, Crossville, TN., third place.
Four Judges Awards went to Kavich for Best Shadowbox; Cardenas for Moulding Innovation; Jill and Tom Haury, The Great Frame Up, Birmingham, MI, for Large Theme; and Robin Fox, The Great Frame Up, Indianapolis, IN, for Creativity. Robin Gentry, MCPF, B & J Gallery, Bowling Green, KY, earned an Honorable Mention.
Colorado Moulding Under New Ownership
Paul Skillman is the new owner of Colorado Moulding Company, located in Englewood, CO. The company is a wholesaler of custom framing supplies and serves the Rocky Mountain West. Skillman has a background in marketing and finance and brings a dedication to family-owned business. He says, “We are delighted to pursue this opportunity to bring best practices in operations and service to our customers. We have great respect for the retail and artist community that we serve. Helping them succeed is our primary goal.”

PPFA Offers New Guidelines for Framing
Works of Art on Paper
The Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA) has published the newly revised and expanded, “PPFA Guidelines for Framing Works of Art on Paper.” The new format features more illustrations, preservation requirements for each section, and the description, advantages, and disadvantages for each item or material included.
The guidelines sections include, “How Works of Art on Paper Are Damaged,” “The Condition of Works of Art on Paper,” “Developing a Design,” and “Framing Content Areas.”

Larson-Juhl Donates $10,000 to the Dream House
As part of its new community service initiative, Larson-Juhl partnered with the Dream House for Medically Fragile Children as a focus project for its 2008 fundraising efforts.
Dream House is an organization that offers a unique Transition Care Model providing education, skills training, home modifications, equipment, and health care supplies to enable families to care for their medically fragile children at home. Dream House also offers a place for the transition to take place, with a staff of nurses and constant caregivers, to help the children and their families.
Larson-Juhl Atlanta came together as a team for numerous activities and fundraisers, with proceeds benefiting the Dream House. Some of the team's activities included a karaoke fundraiser, team member frame sale, a silent auction, and raffle. After the culmination of these events, Steve McKenzie, president and CEO of Larson-Juhl, and Dave Calhoun, president of Larson-Juhl North America, presented a check for $10,008 to Laura Alexander, Dream House representative.
